Globalization

Globalization is a progress used to describe the developing of the economy and the culture. It has sparked the amazing change of the past decade. This is as a result of improvement in technology and communication and the influence of people’s experience of everyday life all over the world.

Supporters point to better products are more effective to produce and therefore cheaper for everyone. Many poor counties have benefited from investment under the globalization. It means a faster rate of development for the whole world. Indeed it also connects people by means of communication and offers them opportunities for travel work and education.

Critics of globalization have argued that the process benefits the rich nations, who control prices, who influence the economies. It has exploited people in developing countries, caused massive disruptions to their lives and produced few benefits in return. It simply means sweatshops in poor countries so that rich countries can have cheap goods. It will lead to widen the gap between rich and poor.

In my opinion, globalization makes the world as a smaller place than before. People are now much easier to communicate with others who live in different countries. So globalization has also greatly influenced local cultures and traditions. However, it is only good for those who are already economically strong. There is a lot of inequality involved in globalization and the desire for cheaper products. It also causes the destruction of natural resources and the environment.

Culture shock 2

Today I receive a letter from Lloyds TSB bank. It makes me funny and annoying. This is really ridiculous.

A month ago, I opened an account at Lloyds TSB bank. Their service was really good with sunshine smiling. Everything went smoothly. So I went to home and waited for receiving my bank card. Two days later, I got my one bank card of the saving account. The fact is contrary that the British people are inefficiency of which I used to heart. I wish I would get my Debit card quickly.

Things always go athwart. After one month, I had not obtained my card. In this month, I had received four letters from Royal Mail. It required me to arrange a delivery for the Debit card on the internet. The first time, I booked on the internet seriously, but I did not acquire the card. After a few days, I received the second letter from Royal Mail. I did this again with patience. But when I received the fourth letter, I was very anger. Why did you just send me a letter not a bank card? So I contrast to the bank. Of course, with the warm words, they said I could get my card at the bank directly, but I need booking!

Finally, I got my card after a week of arrangement. I have used it for over one week. Today I receive a letter from bank. It says: your card is at the bank now. When you have a chance, please drop in and pick it up! This is really ridiculous. I realize that the British people are really inefficiency.

Culture shock

I have been in London over 8 weeks. Instead of the honeymoon stage, I am in the fatigue life stage. Compared with the first week, I am no more looking around and observed people when walking in the street or on the bus, just keeping walking as quickly as possible to save times or having a nap on the bus to grab some shut-eye.

I change my life style to adapt to new environment. Now I am accustomed to eat cheers and pizza, to listen British music and radio, to understand the way of pronunciation by British people. It is not difficult for me to be used to the life in London. But it is a challenge to study in adaptation of the education system in the UK.

Students who are studying in UK need to do presentation frequently. But it is almost impossible to do this in the education system of Chinese. In the UK, students spent most of time on discussion with classmates or on doing reference and research in library, as we are now doing presentation and report. In contrast, Chinese students are more dependent on teachers.

In my opinion, I tend to study by yourself independently rather than didactic teaching. Although it is easy to understand the meaning of the new knowledge by didactic teaching, the creative idea may be limited and even killed. It is the passive influence in a creative way, especially in the area of design.

Activity one (Five steps to effective paraphrasing )

Paraphrase
At present, architects and engineers are impossible to give up exploring the tallest building of the world such as the Sears Tower which is the perfect consummation in skyscraper engineering demonstrably. It shows a problem of the limited height of a building. According to architect Robert Sobel saying that the building could achieve 500-story by existing technology, a building has be designed as high as the Sears Tower by structural engineer named William LeMessurier.

Original
While the Sears Tower is arguably the greatest achievement in skyscraper engineering so far, it’s unlikely that architects and engineers have abandoned the quest for the world’s tallest building. The question is ‘just how high can a building go?’ structural engineer William LeMessurier has designed a skyscraper nearly one-half mile high, twice as tall as the Sears Tower. And architect Robert Sobel claims that existing technology could produce a 500-story building.

Ways of Seeing

In our urban world, we are surrounding by images of alternative way of life. No matter what we are rich or poor, we have to spend on money. Publicity gives us transformation by people who are power being transform and as a result enviable. This state of being envied constituted glamour. Publicity is a process of manufactory glamour. Without social envy, glamour can not exist. Glamour is new, because society is changes.

Oil painting and publicity image has much in common. They used many same references, celebrate same quality things, share same ideals. But the purpose and fact are much different. The oil painting began with facts of anther’s life. In contrast, publicity builds a life way that we aspire to or think way we aspire to, but it has not yet achieved. We can achieve such radiant if we have money. Publicity give us both promise and threatens. It suggests inadequate as you are and consoles you with promise of your dream. Behind the dream, there is an interminable and monotonous working line.

Here are three dreams: the dream of later tonight; the skin dream; far away place dream. Publicity works on the imagination, but it does something else too.
Publicity is neutral, just an objects, until have to been made glamour.

Between each page, there is such fissure disconnection and incoherence. Culture is mad. There is no communication between the two worlds. But they contrast beyond the understanding. Our own needs are the real connection between publicity of dreams and their life. Finally, production is judged by your experiences.

Academic Arguments

When comes to the academic argument, it is completely different with our everyday English as we known. According to the way of learning stuff about academic arguments, the main points are as follows. The definition of argument in academic writing is opinion add support. The argument was present by means of an opinion given by author and supported by any facts or reasons that help the reader to agree with it. An opinion must be a statement, opposed to “facts”, which may be conflict by some person. For example, the Berlin Wall was pulled down in 1990. Its removal has come to symbolize the break-up of the old Soviet Empire. The former sentence is a fact, and the latter is an opinion. Because the fact is supported within a message, then the whole message is an explanation. If the message continually indicates that people’s live, ideological and social changes in charge of the new government, show some evidences to support the opinion, it will be an argument. Finally, the position of the opinion before the support is recommended in academic writing.

The first time

Last Friday, we finished the Dragon's Den project. Our group completed presentation CYC-change your cover successfully.

The idea came from the word “recycle”. We wanted to recycle the material which was out of date for creating new function. According to this ideal, we started to work after a meeting that discussed how to separate and co-operate effectively and friendly. Future graphic designers from BA class needed to design the style of book’s cover and the box of tools. Marie, Jing and I researched on the internet to collect information about marketing and others relevant to production. Everything went on steadily.

I think it was not difficult for us to prepare materials and collect information. But there was a challenge that we must do the presentation in the class. Spoken English is thorny problem for us and of course for me. We encouraged each other and prepared seriously.

Time passed so fast that I was really nervous. Because this is my first time do the presentation. So I wrote down summaries on the paper and tried to practise by myself in advance. When I stated my view in front of class, my heart beat fast and blood pressure soars at the beginning. After one minute, I entered the role of speaker and finish the presentation completely. Although there are some flaws during speaking, I have a great sense of accomplishment. In fact, speaking English is not difficult as your imagining, as long as you open your mouth!

First impressions of being here

There is a sea line on my sight. I know I am in England, a country with long and glorious history.
In the air, when I look down, the whole city under my feet. Compare with Beijing’s tempest, it is really sunshiny in London. The airplane goes down slowly. I am arriving at Heathrow airport Terminal 5.
The airport is large and luxury as Beijing airport with many complex pathway. But the signpost indicated the right road for us to follow, so we are easily to find out the way to the hall where Martin is waiting for us.
On my way to the accommodation named Even Henderson Court, I go though zigzag streets and narrow roads in London. There are many gothic buildings which are characteristic and beautiful. When we pass by the Oxford Street, many people wear all kinds of fashionable clothes especially young people.
Today is my first day in London. From now on, I will stay here to study for one year and have a better understanding of London.
